Porter County Fair Donates $13,000 to NWI Food Bank
“In a time when tough financial decisions have to be made in order to make ends meet by more and more of our neighbors, to see the overwhelming community support of individuals, families, companies coming together to donate nearly $13,000 during our campaign at the fair is humbling,” says Dennis Steinhilber of the Porter County Fair.
On Tuesday evening, volunteers from the Porter County Fair joined together at their annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. In attendance, Arleen Peterson , Executive Director of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, accepted a check for $12,973.40 from Steinhilber. She stated that the money will make a significant impact on the hungry in Northwest Indiana.
Dennis Steinhilber went on to say that through the efforts of some leaders at the Porter County Fair, who think outside of the box, this donation was possible. For the past couple of years, the Porter County Fair has purchased guitars and has the artists who grace their grandstand stage sign them. The artists are informed that these guitars will be auctioned and 100% of the proceeds will be benefit the hungry. In addition, this year with the Avian Flu, poultry was not permitted at county fairs. A couple leaders in the poultry department decided to buy a frozen turkey to sell at the Celebration Sale. It was mentioned that the proceeds from the frozen turkey would go to support the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana at the sale and people began bidding. After the bidding ended, many people wanted to make an additional contribution, for the Food Bank. The Tractor Pulling provider, Super Show Promotions, found out about our campaign and wanted to be part of it by making a generous contribution.
“Everyone pitched in and helped to pull the wagon”, Steinhilber says. “Support of the Food Bank is very dear to my heart and I am extremely happy with the support that our community has shown”.
